She is the
wife of Zebedee, and mother of James and John, the "Sons of
Thunder". One of the followers of Jesus is Salome, who goes by the name
of Deborah. She is also a sister of
Mary, Jesus' mother, and from this position in the family has a glimpse into
the life of Jesus. Deborah has chosen to follow Jesus rather than stay at
home with Zebedee and the fishing business. She can't quite understand why
James and John are always referred to as "the sons of Zebedee" and
not as "the sons of Deborah". Being one of the followers, and
mother of two of the Twelve, Deborah also has an inside view of what goes on
amongst the Disciples when Jesus talks to the crowds. She also has the
opportunity to hear what her sons have to say about what is going on.
She always sees Jesus as 'our Jesus' and says of her sons: "they're nice
boys". But Deborah's love for Jesus goes a lot deeper than that of her
nephew, as she sees Him being revealed as the Messiah spoken of by the
prophets, and she is eager to share her moments of understanding and
revelation.
